State Bar IT Law section schedules annual meeting
The Information Technology Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan will conduct its annual meeting and seminar on Thursday, Sept. 6 at The Inn at St. John’s in Plymouth.
The annual IT Law section and council meetings will be held during the luncheon, and will include election of council members and section officers.
The cost for the daylong seminar is $75 for IT Law Section members; $125 for non-members; free for student IT Law Section members; $20 for student non-members.

Overdoses stretching Grand Rapids-area medical examiner
GRAND RAPIDS (AP) — A medical examiner in a western Michigan county is seeking an additional $470,000 to keep up with autopsies and other tasks related to the rising number of opioid overdoses.
Dt. Stephen Cohle says his staff “is just worn to a nub” as a result of opioid-related deaths in Kent County, which includes Grand Rapids. He says his office investigated 156 drug overdoses in 2017, up 67 percent over 2016.
Cohle predicts the 2018 numbers will be higher.
He tells The Grand Rapids Press that calls come in at all hours.
Many investigators work part-time. Cohle hopes county leaders will provide money for him to hire at least one more part-time investigator.
California school district settles sex abuse cases for $15M
REDLANDS, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California school district has agreed to pay $15.7 million to settle lawsuits by eight former students who say they were sexually abused by teachers and staff members.
Attorney Morgan Stewart, who represents the former students, said Tuesday that three cases involving eight girls at Redlands High School were settled on Friday.
One case includes six victims who say former special education teacher Kevin Kirkland abused them at school and in his home and car. Kirkland pleaded guilty to abusing students and served 13 months in jail.
The lawsuit naming Kirkland alleged that administrators at Redlands Unified School District knew he was a danger to students for years and did nothing.
The district says it hopes the settlement "will be a basis for healing for the victims and their families."
Deputies report man had 800 pounds of stolen lemons
THERMAL, Calif. (AP) — Talk about driving a lemon!
Authorities say a man was taken into custody in southern California after deputies found about 800 pounds of stolen lemons inside his car.
Riverside County sheriff’s officials say 69-year-old Dionicio Fierros was arrested late last week and booked on a charge of theft of agricultural products.
Deputies were investigating recent farm thefts when they stopped Fierros’ car in Thermal.
Inside his car, deputies say they found several large bags of freshly picked lemons they say were stolen from a nearby farm.
It wasn’t immediately clear if Fierros had an attorney who could comment on the allegations.
