State college Democrats challenge election laws

DETROIT (AP) — Michigan college students who consider themselves Democrats have filed a lawsuit, arguing that the state’s voting laws violate their rights.

The lawsuit seeks to overturn rules that require some first-time voters to cast a ballot in person when they vote for the first time. The lawsuit also targets a law that requires a voter’s registration to match a voter's address on a driver's license.

The case was filed last week in federal court.

Lawyers for Democratic groups at the University of Michigan and Michigan State University say the restrictions prevent students from voting in college towns and discourage them from participating in elections.

In 2004, Gov. Jennifer Granholm, a Democrat, signed a law that required voters who register by mail to cast their first ballot in person. But she encouraged lawmakers to amend it to help college students.

Scrap tires are part of newly paved road in Kalamazoo County

SCHOOLCRAFT (AP) — There's rubber in a road in southwestern Michigan.

Nearly 14,000 scrap tires have been recycled on a pavement project on West W Avenue in Schoolcraft in Kalamazoo County. The county Road Commission says the goal is to create a cost-effective and environmentally friendly surface.

The pavement designs were created in labs at Michigan Technological University in the Upper Peninsula. The Kalamazoo Gazette reports that students traveled to Kalamazoo to watch the construction process earlier in August.

Students are curious about how the road absorbs noise and handles traffic.

A grant from the state is covering half of the $444,000 project.

Left behind: Thieves raid Virginia store of right foot shoes

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) — Try walking a mile in these shoes.

The Roanoke Times reports a Virginia shoe store lost mostly shoes designed for the right foot over the course of two break-ins this summer.

Clean Soles operator Rob Wickham says his two-year-old sneaker store was raided by two people on July 20 and by one person in Aug. 25. Taken together, he lost shirts, hoodies, a jacket, one complete sneaker pair — and 13 right shoes.

Wickham says he typically keeps right shoes on display, while their other halves rest behind the counter. Accordingly, Wickham says the looters were "pretty much risking their freedom for nothing."

Police said one 17-year-old has been charged in the July burglary. Police have also released video of the August heist

Sprinting naked man leads LA police on lengthy pursuit

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A naked man who sprinted with Los Angeles police officers running after him and a police helicopter overhead is in custody after a lengthy chase.

The pursuit at dawn Friday captured live by TV news helicopters began after the man abandoned a suspected stolen truck on a freeway east of downtown.

Illuminated by a police helicopter spotlight, the man sprinted along dirt footpaths, through a homeless encampment and scaled a fence.

The man ran down an embankment and across several busy freeway connector roads, dodging cars. Police caught up with him in a nearby wooded area.
