Michigan family offers $8K for information on hunting death

LANSING (AP) — The family of a man shot and killed last month while hunting deer is offering a more than $8,000 reward for information about his death.

The Lansing State Journal reports that Chong Yang's family held a candlelight vigil for the 68-year-old Thursday at the state Capitol.

A family spokesman said the family initially believed the death was an accident, but now believe it was an “intentional shooting to kill and rob our family member in the woods.”

The family says one main reason they suspect foul-play is because Yang’s firearm and backpack were taken.

Bath Township police say that haven’t yet determined whether the shooting was intentional. Yang was found dead Nov 16 while hunting deer on public land in the township.

State park fee would be an opt-out under Senate-passed bill

LANSING (AP) — State drivers who renew their registration would have to opt out to avoid paying an $11 fee that allows unlimited entry into state parks under a bill advancing in the Legislature.

Currently motorists must opt into paying the Recreation Passport fee when renewing their license plate annually.

The Republican-led Senate passed the bill on a 28-9 vote Thursday, sending it to the GOP-controlled House for consideration next week.

Supporters say switching to an opt-out participation model would generate more revenue to address a $260 million backlog in infrastructure needs in the park system.

Report: Hackers steal $1M from charity

BOSTON (AP) — The Save the Children charity says hackers stole nearly $1 million from the nonprofit through a sophisticated email scam.

The Boston Globe reports that scammers hacked into the email of a worker at the Fairfield, Connecticut-based charity last year, posed as an employee, and created false invoices and other documents to fool the charity into sending nearly $1 million to a fraudulent entity in Japan.

Scammers claimed the money was needed to purchase solar panels for health centers in Pakistan, a country where Save the Children has worked for decades.

The Save the Children Federation , the U.S. affiliate of the international relief organization, said its insurance reimbursed all but $112,000 of the stolen funds.

The charity has since tightened its cybersecurity to prevent fraud.

Truck crashes through home, misses sleeping woman

TEMPLETON, Mass. (AP) — A pickup truck smashed through a home in Massachusetts last week, barely missing a woman who was asleep on her couch.

Police say the crash happened around 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Templeton.

Tracy Samuels, who was sleeping on the couch, says she heard a loud bang, woke up and said, “Why is there a truck in my living room?”

The truck destroyed the family’s Christmas tree and their gifts, but no one was injured in the crash.

Tracy Samuels’ husband, Jason, says the items they lost are replaceable. But he says he and his wife have been together for 27 years, and he can’t replace her.

Police were investigating and no charges were immediately filed.

The home was temporarily condemned.
