Students to receive clear bags after boy brings gun to school
FLINT (AP) — Students at a Michigan charter school are getting clear book bags after a 10-year-old boy allegedly took a loaded handgun to school.
Eagle's Nest Academy in Flint planned to distribute the bags this week. Parents were encouraged to check their children's belongings.
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton has said the boy is charged with two felonies, carrying a concealed weapon and felonious assault, and a misdemeanor charge of having a weapon in a weapons-free zone.
Leyton says the gun was stolen, but it's unclear where he got it.
Police say the boy made fellow students aware that he had the gun earl Thursday and one of them took it to administrators in the school's office. No one was injured.
State seeks input on long-range transportation plan
LANSING (AP) — The state Department of Transportation is seeking public input as it develops a 25-year plan for the state.
The “Michigan Mobility 2045” plan will seek to establish priorities for transportation. The development phase of the plan runs through April.
As part of MDOT’s efforts, telephone town hall meetings will allow the agency to randomly dial as many as 10,000 landline phones per session and offer the public an opportunity to join a conference call, ask
questions and express opinions. A survey and other efforts also will take place.
MDOT says it wants to get opinions from “a large and diverse group of Michigan residents and stakeholders.”
High court stays out of appointment dispute
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is refusing to be drawn into a dispute over the appointment of Matthew Whitaker as the acting U.S. attorney general.
The justices on Monday rejected an appeal in a case dealing with gun rights that also included a challenge to President Donald Trump’s appointment of Whitaker to temporarily lead the Justice Department.
The appeal claims Whitaker’s appointment is illegal under federal law and asks the court to name Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein as a party in the case, instead of Whitaker.
The Justice Department in November released an internal legal opinion supporting the legality of Whitaker’s appointment as acting attorney general. Trump has called Whitaker “a highly respected person.”
Former Attorney General William Barr has been nominated by Trump to again lead the Justice Department.
Florida man finds boa constructor under car hood
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — A Florida man got a slithery shock when he popped open the hood of his car and found a boa constrictor resting on the engine.
Ernst Dimanche tells WSVN he had just dropped his kids off at school and came home to work on his Cadillac. He says he saw the snake and “just went crazy.”
The Miami Gardens man says he called animal control but they would charge $300 to help and he couldn’t afford that. He says his neighbor offered to help.
The neighbor, Demetri Giddings pulled the snake out of the car using a hanger. As for Dimanche, he says he can relax now that “my snake day is over.”
