The newly formed Arab-American Law Student Association (AALSA) at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law recently hosted its first event on Monday, featuring Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (fourth from right). The event, titled “Arab-American Woman’s Rise to Congress,” looked into Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s road to Congress where she currently represents the 13th District of Michigan. In 2008, she became the first Muslim woman to serve in the Michigan Legislature. Among those on hand to welcome Tlaib to Detroit Mercy Law were (left to right) Khaled Younes, Mohammad Beydoun, AALSA Secretary Ali Berro, Charein Faraj, Mahmoud Talab, UDM Law Dean Phyllis Crocker, Ahmed Amin, Mustapha Daher, Nicole Miller, and Lameese Mazzal. According to the AALSA mission statement, the student organization is committed to supporting individuals from all cultural backgrounds while promoting Arab-American culture and heritage.
