State Police unit to focus on illegally prescribed opioids

LANSING (AP) — The Michigan State Police has announced a new task force that will look into medical professionals suspected of illegally distributing controlled substances, like opioids.

A doctor in Mason also has been charged with manufacturing illegal prescriptions, possessing controlled substances and health care fraud.

Man exonerated in rape sues state, seeking $81K

DETROIT (AP) — A Detroit man exonerated this year in a 1997 rape is suing the state under Michigan’s wrongful imprisonment law.

James Chad-Lewis Clay’s lawsuit filed in Michigan’s Court of Claims seeks $81,372 and blames Detroit officials for failing to test rape kits in timely manner.

Clay spent 19 months in prison before being freed after reporting by the Detroit Free Press raised doubts about the case.

Clay was convicted in 2017 of raping a teenager in 1997 and sentenced to 25 years based on DNA rape kit evidence that had languished in storage.

He was freed after it emerged he’d had an intimate relationship with the now 37-year-old woman when they were teenagers, around the time she said an
armed man raped her.

Lawmaker criticized for comparing abortion, slavery

Lawmaker criticized for comparing abortion, slaveryLANSING (AP) — A state Republican legislative leader is drawing criticism from state Democrats for likening abortion to the “scourge” of slavery.

State Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey told Hillsdale College’s radio station last week that allowing abortion is comparable to “the scourge we endured when we still had slavery in this country.”

Democratic state Sen. Erika Geiss says Shirkey’s remarks were “incredibly insensitive.” Geiss, who is black, said  it is wrong to compare anything to the “atrocities of slavery” and what it did to black families.

Shirkey’s spokeswoman says he believes abortion is an issue where there’s no middle ground and it has the potential to be as divisive for the country as slavery was. She says he was not referring to the abortion procedure itself as being analogous to slavery.

Seismologists measure shake from fans at MLS championship

SEATTLE (AP) — Seismologists in Washington state have used Major League Soccer’s championship as an opportunity to study information collected while fans shook the stadium.

KING-TV reported the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network installed seismic monitors at CenturyLink Field Sunday for the championship match between the Seattle Sounders and Toronto FC. They found the biggest vibrations happened when the Sounders scored during the team’s 3-1 win.

Researchers from the network based at the University of Washington recorded vibrations during the game to help interpret data registered by seismographs.
Their instruments measure seismic waves from earthquakes or other events that make the ground shake.
