Kiwanis Club of Muskegon held its annual Kiwanis Brogren-Christie scholarship luncheon and awards ceremony April 27. The organization presents scholarships annually to one student from each of the area high schools. Muskegon County Circuit Judge Timothy G. Hicks was the Master of Ceremonies.
Students and faculty from the fourteen high schools were present. The Kiwanis Club of Muskegon created the Kiwanis Brogren-Christie awards in 1986 to recognize a noteworthy senior from each of the area high schools. In particular, Kiwanis wishes to recognize students that have overcome obstacles in their lives and who have gone on to have positive outcomes no matter the circumstance.
Denise LeClaire, guidance counselor for Fruitport High School, presented Fruitport Senior Kyle Morrow with his scholarship from Kiwanis. Speaking on behalf of Morrow, she said: “Kyle has a great work ethic. His attendance is really good and that contributes to his grades. What is more import, Kyle has become an engaged student and that will take him wherever he wants to go in life. He has learned that second chances are gifts and that they should be taken advantage of. It has been a pleasure to have Kyle as a student in my class (from teacher Christine Bowen).”
LeClaire also read a message from one of Morrow’s other teachers, Paul Guzman: “Kyle rode his bike to school almost everyday, rain or shine or snow or sleet because he is out of district and because school is so important to him. He is dependable. You could ask him to help for any reason and he would go above and beyond. He is a hard-working student who gets great grades and is one of the best students I have had in 22 years.”
Presenters of all fourteen scholarships told similar stories of how the student had overcome adversity and persevered to continue their education and complete their studies. The other thirteen recipients and their presenters are:
Kimberly Dekker, Holton High, presented by Steve Hamilton; Allix Miller, Reeths-Puffer High, presented by Dan Beckeman; Jade McGruder, Orchard View High, presented by Dan Bolhuis; Nicholas Hissong, Montague High, presented by Mary Spiwak; Diamond Penegar, Mona Shores High, presented by John Tunney; Tyler Heffron, Muskegon High, presented by Bridget Fox; Brandon Smith, Muskegon Heights High, presented by Marg Cook; Joseph (Joey) Powers, Oakridge High School, presented by Rob Patton; Jessica Grabe, Ravenna High, presented by Kim Kowalski; Jordan VanBuskirk, Western Michigan High, presented by Deanna Chilsom; Katie Cooley, Whitehall High, presented by Steve Lucas; and Patricia Gasior, Muskegon Catholic Central High, presented by David Fisher.
The Kiwanis Club of Muskegon is pleased to be able to assist area students by presenting scholarship to those who have overcome adversity and set their lives on a straight course with the help of teachers, guidance counselors, mentors, and parents. The Kiwanis Club of Muskegon Michigan has the following mission:
