The Michigan Supreme Court released a statement on January 7 regarding Justice Diana Hathaway: The Court was advised this afternoon, by Justice Hathaway’s counsel, that she will retire effective January 21. In the interim, she has agreed not to participate in any matters before the Court, including this week’s oral arguments.

Hathaway was elected to the Supreme Court in Nov. 2008 and started her term in Jan. 2009. She received her law degree from the Detroit College of Law (now Michigan State University College of Law) in 1987.  Hathaway was elected to the Wayne County Circuit Court, 3rd Judicial Circuit, in 1992 and served from 1993 until 2008.

Also on Jan. 7, the Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission issued Formal Complaint No. 91 against Hathaway, which can be accessed at http://jtc.courts.mi.gov.
