Prelaw college students recognized

On Thursday, June 30, 19 college students received their certificates of completion and $750 stipends, at graduation ceremonies sponsored by the State Bar of Michigan Young Lawyers Section, for successfully completing the month-long College Prelaw Summer Institute conducted during June at Cooley Law School's Auburn Hills campus. A partnership of Cooley Law School, Oakland University, and the American Bar Association's Council of Legal Education Opportunity (CLEO), the institute offered students an opportunity to study the critical thinking skills necessary to succeed on the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and in law school. The purpose of the intensive, pre-law program is to help diversify America's next generation of lawyers. The students achieved an average LSAT score increase of nearly five points, including seven students who scored 150 or better. During the graduation ceremony, special certificates of merit were awarded to Shannon King (fourth from right) for Legal Writing, Jayant Trewn (third from right) for Torts, and Joshua Cartee (far right) for Logic and Critical Reasoning. Ronniesha Smith (center), Verlinda King (fourth from left), Joshua Cartee, John Traylor (fifth from left), and David Tomenes (far left) received best courtroom advocate awards for their performance in the program's mock trial competition. Shannon King and David Tomenes delivered remarks on behalf of the students, commenting on the realistic law school experience and rigor of the program. Also taking part in the program was Timothy Wiggins (third from left). Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Cynthia Stephens (fifth from right) was the ceremony's keynote speaker who encouraged the students to take advantage of the dividends the program could pay for them in the future. Program Co-Directors Chris Johnson (second from left) and John Nussbaumer (second from right) thanked the students for their commitment and hard work and encouraged them to continue down the path to law school and the legal profession.
