Former school manager gets 5-year prison sentence
DETROIT (AP) -- A former Detroit Public Schools manager has been sentenced to five years in prison for taking kickbacks from a contractor.
Federal Judge Paul Borman called it an "egregious crime." Stephen Hill admitted in May that he accepted $150,000 after approving a $3.3 million contract for a wellness program for school district employees.
Hill was director of risk management. The contract was not written or put up for bids.
Hill apologized in court Monday and says he knows "how to do better." He pleaded guilty to extortion and conspiracy and said he got bags of cash from co-conspirators. Eight people have been convicted in the investigation.
