County treasurer to hold Kilpatrick's book profits

DETROIT (AP) -- The Wayne County treasurer's office is the escrow agent for money from the sale of ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's memoirs. Wayne County Circuit Court Judge David Groner last Friday appointed the treasurer to hold funds from "Surrendered: The Rise, Fall and Revelation of Kwame Kilpatrick." Groner also ordered that any companies or persons acting as an agent of Kilpatrick and holding money from the book's sales make all payments to the treasurer, who then will turn the money over to the city of Detroit as part of Kilpatrick's court-ordered restitution. Groner's office says Kilpatrick owed the city $860,925.40 as of last Thursday. The book went on sale in August and chronicles parts of a text-messaging sex scandal with a top aide that led to criminal charges in 2008 and eventually jail for Kilpatrick.
