On-job deaths rise 50 pct. in Mich. to 141 in 2010

LANSING (AP) -- The federal government says on-the-job deaths in Michigan rose 50 percent in the latest annual figures. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics recently said that its preliminary count shows 141 people were killed while working in Michigan last year, up from 94 in 2009. The government has been compiling the figures for 19 years, during which the state death total reached a high of 182 in 1999. The 2009 figure was the lowest on record. Nationwide, there were 4,547 fatal work injuries in 2010, compared with 4,551 in 2009. Michigan's 2010 work place deaths included 24 homicides, 22 falls, 20 highway accidents, 14 cases of people hit by objects and seven electrocutions. Published: Tue, Nov 15, 2011
