State sues over claims it owes Detroit water bill

DETROIT (AP) -- The state has filed a lawsuit disputing claims that it owes nearly $5 million to the city of Detroit for a water bill. The Detroit News reported Thursday the state sued in Wayne County Circuit Court to block a city hearing over the claim, saying Detroit failed to provide documentation for the charge. Krystal Crittendon, the city's top lawyer, made an issue of the claim when she unsuccessfully sued to block an agreement between Detroit and the state to fix the city's finances. The state's lawsuit was filed last month by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget. It says Detroit overcharged the state for water at the Michigan State Fairgrounds. The city's water department is seeking the law department's advice on how to handle the dispute. Published: Fri, Jul 6, 2012
