Local Parliamentarian unit to celebrate 50th anniversary

The Detroit Unit of the National Association of Parliamentarians will celebrate its 50th Anniversary on Saturday, May 18, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A combined workshop and celebration will be held at Farina's Banquet Center, 2485 Coolidge Highway, between 11 and 12 Mile Road in Berkley. A continental breakfast and buffet lunch will be served. This year's workshop theme is titled "Detroit Unit of Parliamentarians, 50 Years of Developing and Strengthening Leaders." The series of workshops will provide invaluable information about meeting procedures. It will benefit governmental agencies, homeowner associations, presiding officers, board members and other organizations. Members of the Detroit Unit of the National Association of Parliamentarians are presenting their Annual Workshop so participants will have an opportunity to learn how to use parliamentary procedure to enhance meetings productivity and increase operation efficiency. A great opportunity is provided for attendees to become a more confident presiding officer, or an outstanding member of their organization. Jewel Johnson Jones, president of the Detroit Unit of Parliamentarians states, "Knowing a few basics parliamentary concepts about the art of presiding and rules for deliberative debate makes it possible for both large and small groups to run more effective meetings and make better decisions." "It is difficult to find another branch of knowledge where a small amount of study produces such great results in increased efficiency in a country where the people rule as in parliamentary law," Brigadier General Henry M. Robert, author of "Robert's Rules of Order," declared. Anyone interested in attending should contact Josephine Smith of the Detroit Unit by phone at 313-388-7003 or by email at jsjodsmith@aol.com for a brochure. The Detroit Unit meets on the 4th Saturday of most months (May and December the third Saturday) at the Northwest Activities Center, 18000 Meyers in Detroit from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Meetings are open to the public.
