Secretary of state urges organ donor sign-up
LANSING (AP) -- Michigan's Secretary of State Ruth Johnson has kicked off Donate Life Month to encourage Michigan residents to become potential organ donors.
Johnson was joined by health officials and Michigan residents waiting for organs Tuesday at Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit to raise awareness of the need for organ donors.
She says in a statement that one-third of the people in Michigan waiting for a transplant live in Wayne County. There are more than 3,000 people waiting for transplants in Michigan.
Johnson says nearly a million people in Michigan signed up to become potential organ donors in 2011 and 2012.
