Professionalism in Action: Viviano to give keynote address at orientation

 Michigan Supreme Court Justice David Viviano, the court's newest appointee, will be the keynote speaker for the Professionalism in Action Orientation at Cooley Law School’s Auburn Hills campus.  The event, conducted on Tuesday, April 30, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., will begin with Viviano speaking on ethics and professionalism in the legal profession. It will also feature small group discussions where students sit with an experienced attorney and judge and explore a variety of ethical issues they may confront as law students and lawyers.

 
Viviano was appointed to the Michigan Supreme Court by Governor Rick Snyder in February.  Before his appointment, he served as the chief judge on the Macomb County Circuit Court and worked as an attorney for Dickinson Wright law firm in Detroit and Jenner & Block law firm in Chicago. He also attended Hillsdale College and the University of Michigan Law School.
 
“The keynote speaker for this event should be someone who demonstrates consistent ethics and integrity in his or her practice,” said Lisa Halushka, Cooley Law School's acting associate dean at the Auburn Hills campus. “Justice Viviano, with his reputation for candor, fairness and measured temperament, will be a great fit for our keynote speaker and we are so proud to have him speak to our students.”
 
The Professionalism in Action Orientation is held for incoming students at the beginning of every term.  Past group discussion participants include: U.S. District Court Chief Judge Gerald Rosen, Eastern District of Michigan; Michigan Court of Appeals Judges Kurtis Wilder and Cynthia Stephens; Michigan Supreme Court Justice Brian Zahra; Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson; former Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association President Douglas Hampton; and several former presidents of the State Bar of Michigan including Thomas Cranmer, Edward Pappas, Charles Toy, W. Anthony Jenkins, and Julie Fershtman.
 
The Professionalism in Action Orientation was created in 2009 by past State Bar President Edward Pappas.
