Representative Assembly to meet April 27

The State Bar of Michigan Representative Assembly will tackle important issues when it gathers for its spring meeting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, at Lansing Community College West Campus in Lansing. Former Michigan Supreme Court Justice Marilyn Kelly will deliver a presentation on the report and recommendations of the Michigan Judicial Selection Task Force calling for reform of Michigan's judicial elections process. Kelly served as one of the co-chairs of the task force. The Assembly will also consider the potential development of an inventory attorney rule for Michigan. This proposal was originally suggested by the SBM Master Lawyers Section, to ensure that a reporting member (a member representing a client other than that member's employer) identify to the State Bar of Michigan an active member to serve as an inventory attorney in the event of the reporting attorney's death, disability, or disappearance. Also under consideration at the meeting is a proposed resolution calling for an amendment to Section 19 of article VI of the 1963 Michigan Constitution to delete the prohibition on individuals being appointed or elected to judicial office after age 70. Other items that will be considered at the meeting are MCR 2.306 Depositions on Oral Exam, MCR 2.203 Joining Additional Parties, and MRPC 7.1 Law Firm Advertising. The meeting is open to the public. It was formed in 1971 in order to improve the proportion of State Bar members that actively participate in policymaking.
