No new trial yet for Detroit cop in 7-year-old's death

DETROIT (AP) -- It could be months before another trial is held in the case of a Detroit police officer who admits he mistakenly killed a 7-year-old girl. Joseph Weekley returned to court Thursday, five weeks after a jury couldn't reach a verdict in his involuntary manslaughter trial. Wayne County Judge Cynthia Gray Hathaway says she wants to have a second trial before the end of the year. She told attorneys she'll discuss a date during another hearing on Aug. 21. Weekley is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of Aiyana Stanley-Jones. His gun went off after he and other officers stormed a Detroit home to arrest a murder suspect in 2010. Weekley says he accidentally pulled the trigger when Aiyana's grandmother grabbed his gun. Mertilla Jones denies any interference. Published: Fri, Jul 26, 2013
