Man accused in judge threat case to get psychiatric exam
GRAND RAPIDS (AP) -- A Grand Rapids man who authorities say threatened to kill federal judges and magistrates will undergo a psychiatric examination.
The Grand Rapids Press reports Thomas Horrigan made an initial appearance last Wednesday in federal court in Grand Rapids. Authorities say he sent letters to judges and magistrates in Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo, threatening them as part of a complaint against the legal system.
A lawyer for Horrigan asked for the evaluation. A message seeking comment on behalf of Horrigan was sent last Friday by The Associated Press.
Last Wednesday, U.S. Magistrate Judge Timothy Greeley found "serious concerns as to the competency of the defendant."
Authorities say Horrigan was upset in part because of custody issues involving his children. The letters included a list of demands, including the resignation of judges.
