Club sues Michigan over air permit granted to mine

MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) -- A private group is suing the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality for granting an air quality permit for a nickel and copper mine in the Upper Peninsula. The Mining Journal of Marquette recently reported the suit was filed by the Huron Mountain Club, which owns a hunting preserve in Marquette County near the Eagle Mine site. The mine obtained an air use permit in 2007 but needed an updated version because of changes in operations and equipment. The lawsuit says the state agency didn't adequately evaluate the Eagle Mine project's effects on the environment, including its potential to emit pollution. Department spokesman Brad Wurfel says the permit application was given an extensive review. The suit was filed in Ingham County Circuit Court in Lansing. Published: Tue, Oct 15, 2013
