Lawyer says new bridge is effort to 'ruin business'

DETROIT (AP) -- A lawyer for the Ambassador Bridge's owner says plans to build a second bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, represent an effort to ruin his business. The Detroit Free Press reports Hamish P.M. Hume argued in a filing last week in U.S. District Court in Washington that the effort is "predatory activity." The U.S. government has asked that the federal lawsuit by Manuel "Matty" Moroun be dismissed. Moroun wants to block the project. Michigan earlier this year won approval to build a second bridge between Detroit and Canada. That was a key step toward starting construction on the $3.5 billion project intended to relieve truck congestion and speed up trade at the busiest northern U.S. border crossing.
