Reporter charged with capturing footage of airplane wreckage

BOYNE CITY, Mich. (AP) -- A reporter who gathered footage of the wreckage of a small airplane that crashed in northern Lower Michigan has been charged under a state law that prohibits taking pictures of human remains in a grave. Two people died in the Jan. 6 crash near Boyne City. Damien Leist of the Charlevoix County News says no one told him he could not approach the crash site. Undersheriff Chuck Vondra tells The Detroit News that's not the case. Leist faces up to two years in prison and will be arraigned on Tuesday. The Petoskey News-Review reports the 38-year-old Boyne City resident is charged under a law enacted after a film crew captured images from the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, the ore-hauling ship that mysteriously sank in Lake Superior in 1975.
