Supervisor named 'Housing Counselor of the Year'

A 15-year veteran of the Oakland County Community & Home Improvement Division was named “Housing Counselor of the Year” by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority.

Kathy Williams received the award Tuesday during a luncheon for the Building Michigan Communities Conference held at the Lansing Center in Lansing. Williams, who has been with the county since 1999, said she humbled and surprised to receive the award. She has been helping people for 35 years.

“I’m honored to receive an award for something I feel so passionate about and for something I love to do,” Williams said. “I love helping people.”

Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson praised Williams for the work she does for county residents.

“It’s nice to have one of our own recognized for the outstanding work she does,” Patterson said.

“Given our recent economy, Kathy was deluged with hours and hours of work but she handled it like a real pro. My sincere congratulations go to Kathy for the fine work she does.”

Williams, who lives in Lapeer, is supervisor of housing counseling and the homeless services unit for the Community & Home Improvement Division of the Department of Economic Development & Community Affairs. As such, she oversees a staff of housing counselors, writes and administers state and federal grants, and is on various local boards affiliated with homelessness and works to help her clients resolve housing issues they may have.

“She touches the lives of thousands of people directly or indirectly through the work she does,” said division manager Karry Rieth. “I nominated Kathy because she is so good at what she does and her ability to help people resolve problems. She doesn’t just deliver housing counseling services; she is dedicated to eliminate homelessness in Oakland County.”
