More marijuana decriminalization votes expected

BERKLEY (AP) - Supporters of marijuana decriminalization are submitting petitions to place the issue before voters in the Detroit suburb of Berkley. The Detroit Free Press reports that Safer Michigan, a Detroit-based nonprofit coordinating petition drives around Michigan, expects voters in Berkley will see the question in November along with voters in Huntington Woods and Pleasant Ridge. Voters would be asked whether to permit the use, possession or transfer of up to an ounce of marijuana on certain private property by those 21 and older. Decriminalization supporters recently won a court fight with Oak Park to put similar language on that city's Aug. 5 ballot. Hazel Park voters will also see the question that day. Votes could come in other communities this year. Ferndale, Jackson and Lansing voters approved proposals last year. Published: Tue, Jul 08, 2014
