County and Village of Leonard want folks to smile and say 'Cheese'
Citizens are invited to come to the Leonard Mill in the Village of Leonard on Saturday afternoon, July 19, and become a part of history.
Village officials, along with the Oakland County's Planning Division, want to get a group portrait of everyone they can find who will pose near the Leonard Mill for this historic shot. The photo will be submitted to the National Trust for Historic Preservation website as part of its nationwide campaign to advocate for historic treasures.
The photo is to be shot after the village's Strawberry Festival Parade, which is expected to end about 12:30 p.m. Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson plans to attend a pre-festival event Saturday morning at the mill that acknowledges and thanks the many sponsors of the project to restore the building and transform the area into a public park.
He encouraged residents and visitors alike to turn out for the picture. The Leonard Mill is located at 158 E. Elmwood, adjacent to the Polly Ann Trail.
"This is part of our history," Patterson said. "If you tear it down and put up a video store, you've lost that history something that can never be restored. This is such a wonderful project for Leonard. Good for them."
The mill/grain elevator, which was built in 1889, is seen as having historic preservation and economic development benefits for the community. Grants are being sought to complete the project, which would ultimately include a visitor center for the Polly Ann Trail, permanent restrooms, bike racks and a picnic area.
