Legal Aid and Defender Association expands partnership with Oakland Livingston Human Service Agency

Legal Aid and Defender Association Inc. (LAD) has been helping Oakland Livingston Human Service Agency (OLHSA) celebrate its 50th anniversary by conducting free outreach clinics on civil legal services at OLHSA’s office in Pontiac as well as its office in Ferndale.

LAD conducts the clinics for income-eligible residents of Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties throughout the tri-county area. It began conducting clinics at OLHSA’s office in Ferndale, now located at 1956 Hilton Road, in 2004, according to Kelly Bidelman, managing attorney of LAD’s Oakland County office in Pontiac and vice chair of OLHSA’s South Oakland Advisory Council.

This June, LAD began conducting clinics at OLHSA’s office at 196 Cesar E. Chavez Ave. in Pontiac, Bidelman said. “We expanded our outreaches to include OLHSA’s Pontiac location since OLHSA’s Head Start program and the Pontiac Academy of Excellence are located there. We wanted to make sure the parents had access to our civil legal services,” she said.

LAD conducts its clinics at OLHSA in Pontiac on the first Monday and third Tuesday of every month and at OLHSA in Ferndale on the second Friday of every month, February through November. All clinics run from 9 a.m. to noon. Attendees are asked to register before 10 a.m. as LAD attorneys will assist only those persons who have done so by that time. For further information, contact Stacey Felder, paralegal in LAD’s Oakland County office, at (248) 253-1548, ext. 4005.

“OLHSA is grateful for our partnership with the Legal Aid and Defender Association and appreciative of the legal assistance they provide to OLHSA clients,” OLHSA CEO Ron Borngesser said. “We look forward to continuing this partnership and serving our local residents in times of need.”

OLHSA was founded in 1964 as a part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty. It is the largest private nonprofit agency delivering human services to Oakland and Livingston counties, according to its website (http://www.olhsa.org/).

“We welcome those in need with a comprehensive set of services, focusing on meeting the basic needs of senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and people suffering from economic hardship. Our broad range of connected services empowered more than 50,000 clients last year to reach or maintain self-sufficiency,” the website said.

Founded in 1909, LAD is the oldest and largest provider of free civil legal services to low- income residents of Michigan. It serves metropolitan Detroit through its offices in Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties. It also represents criminal defendants in Wayne County and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

“We work with clients in a comprehensive manner, so that as we solve their legal problems, we help solve other problems as well,” LAD President and CEO Deierdre L. Weir said. “We help people rebuild their lives and help families stay together.”
