Lakeshore Legal Aid receives OCBF grants

Lakeshore Legal Aid is pleased to announce that the Oakland County Bar Foundation has continued its support of the Family Law Assistance Project law clinic and the Estate Planning Clinic by awarding grants totaling $50,000 to assist the low income citizens of Oakland County with their legal needs. The Family Law Assistance Project, referred to as FLAP, is a hybrid student clinic at the Western Michigan University Cooley Law School that utilizes staff attorneys, law student attorneys, and volunteer attorneys to provide free legal assistance to low income people in Oakland County with family law legal issues. In the past year FLAP has helped more than 900 Oakland County residents with family law matters involving such important issues as domestic violence, child custody, divorce and parenting time. The Estate Planning Clinic at the Thomas M. Cooley Law School assists low income senior citizens with their end of life document needs, such as Wills, Powers of Attorney for Health Care, and Durable Powers of Attorney for Finances. Last year the Estate Planning Clinic assisted more than 150 seniors with their estate planning legal concerns. William Knight, executive director of Lakeshore Legal Aid said "This is the ninth year in a row that the Oakland County Bar Foundation has generously supported the legal help that Lakeshore Legal Aid provides to the most vulnerable people in our community." Professor Dustin Foster, director of the student clinics at the Auburn Hills campus of Cooley Law School, also acknowledged the benefit the Foundation's support provides the low income people of Oakland County. "With the help of the staff attorneys, law students handle the legal cases from the initial interview, through the court hearings, to a final court order," Foster noted. "The students are learning not only how to practice law in an actual courtroom, but also how lawyers have an obligation to help the people in our communities who are most in need."
