Southfield approves public arts commission

SOUTHFIELD (AP) - Councilmembers in Southfield have approved an ordinance establishing a public arts commission for the Oakland County community. Six members of the commission will be appointed by the City Council. Three others will be appointed by Southfield's mayor with council confirmation. The commission will promote the arts in Southfield by establishing physical works of art in public places. It also will raise money to buy and install pieces, and develop a public art plan. The plan has to be reviewed and approved by the City Council. The arts commission ordinance was approved Oct. 20. Councilman Ken Siver said "a vibrant art scene creates a more livable city and enhances a sense of place." Published: Thu, Oct 30, 2014
