Mich. State University enrollment tops 50,000

EAST LANSING (AP) - Michigan State University has topped 50,000 students for the first time in school history. The Lansing State Journal recently reported that the East Lansing school had 50,085 students to start the fall semester. The school had said enrollment was expected to be about 49,700 - up from 49,300 last year. Provost June Youatt says retention is a priority, but "there's not a strategy to grow to 55,000 or 52,000 or 51,000" students. Undergraduate enrollment has increased from 35,408 in the fall of 2004 to 38,786 this year. Most of that growth is from international students. Admissions director Jim Cotter says the school remains committed to the state, but understands the importance of bringing in "talent from around the country and around the globe."
