Court conducts graduation

Oakland County Circuit Court Chief?Judge (second from left) was happy to preside over the inaugural graduation ceremony of the state’s first Combat Veterans Treatment Court on Wednesday, Jan. 14, in Grant’s courtroom.

Also on hand for the ceremony were (left to right) Sgt. Xayvier Swensen, Heather Wayne, Mike Daves, and Probation Officer Marseille Allen.

Several years ago, Grant realized that some of the defendants in her courtroom were veterans who had never been in trouble with the law before their deployment.  Later, Allen and Grant began an informal program with some veterans who were having trouble with their probation.  Building on the success of the informal program, Grant founded the Oakland County Combat Veterans Treatment Court in 2013.

“The participants are men and women who have experienced combat, conflict, or search-and-rescue or recovery while serving their country and whose lives have been detrimentally affected by their service,” Grant said.

“The program changes the lives of our military veterans through intense supervision, mental health and substance abuse treatment, readjustment counseling and mentoring with military veterans who can relate to their combat experiences. The program is designed to serve as an alternative to incarceration. The Combat Veterans Treatment Court is the only program in Michigan that exclusively has veterans whose combat experiences directly led to their involvement with the criminal justice system.”
