Alumni to share expertise on international law
"Fresh Perspectives on International Law" will be the topic of the Tuesday, Feb. 17, installment of Wayne State University Law School's Alumni Speaker Series.
Four alumni will share their expertise from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. in Lecture Hall 2242 of the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights at the law school, 471 W. Palmer St. The event is free, and lunch will be provided. Parking will be available for $7 (credit and debit cards only) in Structure One across West Palmer Street from the law school. Register by contacting Kaylee Place at kaylee.place@wayne.edu or 313-577-2731.
Professor Gregory Fox, director of Wayne Law's Program for International Legal Studies and a widely cited authority on international law and international organizations, will moderate the panel. In addition to his academic work, he has served as counsel in several international cases. His recent scholarship has focused on the external governance of territories.
Panelists who will share their experiences and advice are:
- Kimberly Berger, Wayne Law class of 1999, a partner in the litigation and dispute resolution and intellectual property groups at Miller Canfield Paddock & Stone's Detroit office. She specializes in domestic and international trademark prosecution and intellectual property litigation, including domain name disputes, trade secrets, unfair competition, false advertising, and trademark and copyright infringement.
- Brad Bidwell, class of 2011, lead global data security and data privacy attorney for Dow Chemical Co. in Midland. He also sits on Dow's e-Discovery committee and serves as counsel for information security and Dow's information technology purchasing groups. Prior to joining Dow, Bidwell worked at an intellectual property firm in Bloomfield Hills, specializing in domestic and international trademark prosecution and enforcement and intellectual property litigation.
- Joseph DeVito, who earned his law degree in 1995 and his master of laws in corporate finance in 2005, both from Wayne Law. An attorney with Howard & Howard in Royal Oak, he concentrates his practice on business and financial transactions and real estate matters, including international business transactions. DeVito formerly served as assistant general counsel responsible for mergers and acquisitions for ThyssenKrupp in North America and has served as interim general counsel for corporate clients in the automotive, technology and service industries.
- Bryan Zair, class of 2004, a partner in the corporate and securities practice group of Mayer Brown LLP's Chicago office. Zair's practice focuses on representing publicly traded and privately held U.S., foreign and multinational clients in the areas of mergers and acquisitions; joint ventures, strategic alliances and similar structures; and other complex commercial arrangements. Prior to joining Mayer Brown, Zair was an associate in the corporate practice group of Clark Hill PLC in Detroit.
The Alumni Speaker Series is a part of Wayne Law's efforts to link alumni with students and build professional connections.
