Center hosts fundraiser to end youth bullying

Local non-profit, Oakland Mediation Center (OMC) invites Oakland County community members to sign up for the annual “Piñatas for Peace FIESTA!” event on Friday, May 1, at Tequila Blue in Royal Oak. Participants can register online at www.mediation-omc.org

“Piñatas for Peace FIESTA!” will benefit the schools of Oakland County by raising funds to implement programs proven to end bullying and youth violence up to 70%. Registration for the event is $30 in advance or $35 at the door. Ticket price includes a lavish fajita dinner, unlimited drinks, and valet service.

All proceeds will be used to cover the program costs of implementing the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program which is the most researched and well-known bullying prevention program in the world. This school wide program will teach all grade levels the importance of treating others with respect and how to deal with conflict peacefully, all while improving peer relations and creating an environment in which children feel comfortable and are able to learn and develop. Implementing this program can help over 30,000 students over a ten year time period.

“This is OMC’s fourth year hosting the Cinco de Mayo celebration and every year we’ve not only accomplished our fundraising goals, but continued to increase participation,” said Bonnie Hanes, OMC
executive director.  “With the help of the community and the exciting event, we anticipate raising enough finds to implement anti-bullying programs in 5 schools.”

FIESTA! Starts at 6 p.m. and runs until 9 p.m. During the event, participants are invited to partake in the donated photo booth, silent auction, and raffle.
