The White House Business Council and the State Bar of Michigan Intellectual Property Law Section presented Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office Michelle K. Lee (left) for a discussion of current developments and topics in patent law and policy on Friday, April 17, at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law in Detroit. Happy to welcome Lee to the UDM Law atrium were (left to right) Intellectual Property Law Section Chair Karl T. Ondersma of Gardner, Linn, Burkhart, & Flory LLP in Grand Rapids and UDM Law Dean Phyllis L. Crocker. Lee discussed several key initiatives of the USPTO including the recently-announced Patent Quality Initiative aimed at enhancing the quality of patent examination and issued patents as well as the rule making that is currently underway with respect to AIA reviews in the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. She also discussed current proposals for patent reform legislation pending or under consideration in Congress, and more generally, the role of patents and other forms of intellectual property in driving innovation. A networking breakfast followed the discussion.
