Michigan warns of wildfire danger because of heat

LANSING (AP) — Michigan authorities say there’s a growing danger of wildfires because of hot weather and a lack of rain in many parts of the state.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources said Wednesday the conditions mean it’s classifying the fire danger as high to very high in wide areas of the state. It says the conditions probably will persist into the weekend.

The National Weather Service says Michigan’s temperatures Wednesday reached 94 at Ypsilanti, 92 at the Detroit suburb of Troy, 87 at Traverse City in northern lower Michigan and 86 at Munising in the central Upper Peninsula.

Department fire prevention specialist Dan Laux says those lighting outdoor fires should use fire rings in nonflammable areas sheltered from the wind, with water and a shovel nearby.
