The American Bar Association is launching a new initiative, And Justice for All: An ABA Day of Service, which aims to mobilize tens of thousands of lawyers to volunteer their legal services to those in need on Friday, October 30. The day comes at the conclusion of National Celebrate Pro Bono Week, which is October 25-31.
The goals for the ABA Day of Service include:
• Recruiting more pro bono volunteers and increasing the legal services offered to poor and vulnerable people.
• Mobilizing community support for pro bono service.
• Recognizing the pro bono efforts of America’s lawyers.
“Lawyers provide more pro bono service than any other profession. Pro bono work not only improves the profession and advances the rule of law, it also shows the nation that lawyers matter, and helps make our nation’s pledge of ‘justice for all’ a reality,” ABA President Paulette Brown said.
The website, http://www.probono.net/celebrateprobono/, offers planning tips and guides, a page for bar associations, law firms, law schools, judicial circuits and other entities to register their events and an interactive map showing pro bono celebration events across the country and the world.
Registered activities include such events as:
• Veteran’s Wills Clinic in Boise, Idaho.
• Prisoner Re-entry Assistance Clinic in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
• Legal Clinic for Cancer Patients in Louisville, Ky.
• Volunteering at the Atlanta Community Food Bank in Ga., part of a week’s worth of pro bono activities by the Coco-Cola Company Legal Department.
• Ask-a-Lawyer Clinic at Homeless Services Day in North Little Rock, Ark.
The hashtag #ABADayofService will be used as part of a social media blitz throughout the week.
