DETROIT (AP) - Thirty small businesses in Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park each have won $10,000 grants for their innovation and ingenuity.
The grants are part of the New Economy Initiative's NEIdeas: Rewarding Ideas for Business Growth.
More than 500 businesses applied for the $10,000 awards. The awards are for firms three years and older that gross less than $750,000 annually.
The winners were selected based on growth opportunity, their history and mission, neighborhood impact and financial standing. They include a prosthetics firm, coffee shop, plumbing contractor, clothing manufacturer, dental practices, a popcorn company and an urban farm.
Two businesses that gross between $750,000 and $5 million will receive $100,000 grants. Those will be announced in December.
The New Economy Initiative is a $135 million philanthropic effort to support entrepreneurs and small businesses.
