County officials announce 3rd Gun Safety Awareness Day

The Oakland County Board of Commissioners' Public Services Committee's Curbing Gun Violence Study Group is continuing its ongoing effort to promote gun safety awareness in Oakland County by announcing the 3rd Annual Gun Safety Awareness Day News Conference, which will be held on Tuesday, June 7, in the Oakland County Board of Commissioners' Auditorium, located at 1200 North Telegraph Road.

The Oakland County Board of Commissioners in partnership with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, the National Project ChildSafe/National Shooting Sports Foundation organization, the Lock-It-Up Oakland Project Committee and Lock-It sponsors: Dunham's Sports, Costco, and Sam's Club will be joined by more than thirty law enforcement agencies from across Oakland County at the June 7th news conference, which will kick-off the annual countywide Gun Safety Day Free Gun Lock Giveaway program on Friday, June 10.

At the news conference, free gun locks will be given to participating police departments for distribution in their respective communities to residents in recognition of Gun Safety Awareness Day on June 10. The newly funded initiative "Lock-It-Up Oakland" campaign will be unveiled at the news conference. "Lock-It-Up-Oakland" was recently funded $5,000 by the Oakland County Board of Commissioners at the May 18 Board meeting as part of the Board's ongoing educational public awareness campaign to promote the importance of safely storing fire arms in gun safes.

Oakland County Commissioner Bill Dwyer, Board Vice Chairman Michael Spisz, and Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, along with Commissioners Marcia Gershenson and Janet Jackson, Southfield Police Chief Eric Hawkins and Novi Police Chief David Malloy will speak.

An overview of the Curbing Gun Violence Work Study Group's ongoing efforts will be discussed at the new conference, including the new project Lock-It-Up Oakland and the Lock-It-Up Oakland Project Committee consisting of Oakland County Commissioner Bill Dwyer, Oakland County Sheriff Michael J. Bouchard, Farmington Police Chief Frank Demers, Novi Police Chief David Molloy South Lyon Police Chief Lloyd Collins, and West Bloomfield Chief Michael Patton will be presented.

Commissioners Bill Dwyer and Marcia Gershenson have led the bipartisan effort of Curbing Gun Violence in Oakland County. This partnership includes members of the Oakland County Curbing Gun Violence Work Study Group consisting of Commissioners Bill Dwyer, Michael Spisz, Gary McGillivary, John Scott, Janet Jackson, Marcia Gershenson and the members of the Public Service Committee consisting of Bill Dwyer (Committee Chairperson), Mike Spisz (Committee Vice Chairperson), Janet Jackson (Committee Minority-Vice Chairperson), Gary McGillivray, John A. Scott and Eileen T. Kowall. This effort is supported by the Oakland County Board of Commissioners.
