'The Cube' to boost offerings at Detroit Symphony's home

DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Symphony Orchestra has revamped and renamed a performance space that aims to further expand offerings at its musical headquarters.

The orchestra on Monday introduced the Peter D. & Julie F. Cummings Cube, which it's informally calling "The Cube." The new name marks the launch of new programming for the black-box performance venue within the orchestra's home, the Max M. & Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center.

The Cube's full name honors Peter and Julie Cummings, who have given more than $10 million to the orchestra. Peter Cummings also is the DSO's chairman emeritus.

Orchestra officials say the space is designed to attract diverse, genre-busting programming. On tap for Monday night's launch party was Red Baraat, an eight-piece band blending North Indian Bhangra, go-go, rock and jazz.
