Clerk/Register of Deeds office cuts wasteful spending

Oakland County Clerk/Register of Deeds Lisa Brown spent $1.9 million less than was budgeted for her office in Fiscal Year 2015-16 by continuing to cut wasteful spending while improving services to Oakland County residents.

The projected budget for the Clerk/ROD office was $10.5 million, while actual expenditures for the fiscal year were $8.6 million. Last year, Brown spent $1.5 million less than budgeted. The budget is set by the Oakland County Board of Commissioners.

“My staff and I are working to run a lean and efficient office, and it’s paying off for Oakland County taxpayers,” said Lisa Brown. “We successfully trimmed the fat, which has allowed us to come in under budget each year I’ve been in office.”

One example of how the Clerk/ROD office is doing more for Oakland County residents is the launch of the Property Records Notification (PRN) system. A national award winning system, PRN allows users to know the up-to-date status of their property and alerts them to potential real estate fraud simply by signing up for the free email service.

Brown also spearheaded resolutions recently passed by the County Board of Commissioners that reduce the fee to order vital records online as well as reduce the fee for a senior citizen’s copy of their birth certificate.

“Our goal is to make it easier and more convenient to do business with Oakland County,” Brown said. “Reducing the online fee makes it more convenient for customers to access their records, as well as reduce the line at our counters.”
