Highland Park loses appeal over unpaid water bills

DETROIT (AP) - The Michigan appeals court has ruled in favor of Detroit in a $20 million water dispute with Highland Park.

The court says Detroit's water department has a right to collect unpaid bills, affirming a 2015 decision by a Wayne County judge. Under Michigan law, the huge tab could be added to property tax bills in Highland Park. But it's unclear what will happen next.

Highland Park didn't challenge the validity of the $20 million award, only Detroit's ability to collect it. Highland Park cited a federal law, but the appeals court says it doesn't fit.

The 3-0 decision was released Wednesday.
