To promote peace and tolerance in the law school community and beyond, the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law hosted a dedication and blessing ceremony of a peace pole in the outdoor courtyard of its downtown campus on Tuesday, Nov. 1. Taking part in the ceremony were (left to right) Father Gary Wright, University of Detroit Mecy Provost Pamela Zarkowski, Detroit Mercy Law Dean Phyllis Crocker, and Detroit Mercy Law Prof. Anne Yantus. The dedication was followed by a presentation in the indoor atrium where law students shared stories of discrimination based on race, religion, gender, and ethnic background. The peace pole is an internationally-recognized symbol of the hopes and dreams for peace in this world. Detroit Mercy Law joins many other organizations with a peace pole in Detroit, including the McNichols Campus of Detroit Mercy, Freedom House, Hope House, and the Fort Street Presbyterian Church.
