Local hip-hop scene explored through photos

DETROIT (AP) - A new exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts features portraits that show the history, influences and legacy of Detroit's hip-hop music scene.

"D-Cyphered: Portraits by Jenny Risher" opened last Friday and runs through Feb. 18. The photographer collaborated with musical artists, producers and DJs on the portraits. They're taken on Detroit's street corners as well as at recording studios, concert halls and other sites throughout the city.

In addition to more than 80 color photos on display, an audio mix produced by Nick Speed will play continuously in the museum gallery. More than 230 hip-hop artists, producers, DJs and promoters are featured in the photos.

Risher has dedicated the exhibition to the late Detroit rapper DeShaun Holton, known as Proof, who was fatally shot in 2006.
