Oakland County hosts drive for hurricane relief supplies

Oakland County will be collecting donations of dry supplies for the victims of Hurricane Harvey 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily now until Friday, Sept. 8, in the parking lot behind the North Office Building (Building 26 East) on its government campus, County Executive L. Brooks Patterson announced recently.

“Oakland County cares about the hurricane victims in the Houston area,” Patterson said. “I’ve spoken with Harris County Judge Ed Emmett who says he is grateful for the way America is coming
together to help the Houston area with the challenges that lay ahead.”

Deputy County Executive Phil Bertolini, whose brother retired earlier this year from the Houston Police Department, is coordinating this effort.

“We’ve consulted with emergency management professionals to create a list of needed items to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey with the early stages of recovery,” Bertolini said. “We’re looking for dry goods that will assist Hurricane Harvey victims with clean-up, hygiene, child care and pet care.”

For a complete list of supplies to donate, go to www.OakGov.com/OaklandCares, which also has a map to the drop-off location. Please do not donate food, water, or clothing (except new socks, new undergarments and new flip-flops) at this time.

Southeast Michigan companies are stepping up to help Oakland County with this supply drive. Great Lakes Wine & Spirits, PVS Chemicals, Inc., and Soave Enterprises are providing tractor trailers to store and deliver the donated supplies. Lowe’s stores in White Lake and Bloomfield townships are donating pallets to load the supplies into the trucks. Home Depot in Pontiac is supplying boxes in which to pack the donated items.

“Oakland County could not help the victims of Hurricane Harvey without the incredible support of residents and businesses,” Patterson said. “Thank you to all who are assisting in this relief effort.”

The Houston area is not quite ready to start receiving supplies. Oakland County will hit the road to deliver donated supplies the week of Sept. 18 and deliver them to a staging area designated by
Texas emergency management officials.
