Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder recently announced the appointment of Kathleen Trott to the Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board (Children's Trust Fund).

The 11-person board promotes the health, safety and welfare of Michigan's children and families by funding local programs and services that prevent child abuse and neglect.

Trott retired as an assistant attorney general from the Michigan Attorney General's Office in 2013 and previously served as a litigation attorney at Trott & Trott PC. She is a board member of the Eckerd College Board of Trustees and served as a member and president of the board of trustees of CARE House of Oakland County.

Trott earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan, a master's degree in business administration from the University of Detroit and a law degree from Wayne State University Law School. She will represent the legal community and replaces Lena Epstein.

Trott will serve a three-year term expiring Dec. 19, 2020. The appointment is subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.

Colin M. Battersby has joined McDonald Hopkins, a business advisory and advocacy law firm, as counsel in the firm's national Data Privacy and Cybersecurity Practice Group. He is based in Detroit.

Battersby is certified by the International Association of Privacy Professionals as a certified information privacy professional for the United States. He has national experience advising clients regarding best practices to prevent and respond to cybersecurity concerns, including leading data breach incident response efforts in combination with forensic technical vendors and company decision-makers, providing counsel on post-breach notice obligations in accordance with breach notice statutes or specific contractual obligations, drafting and coordinating the delivery of required notices and advising on post-breach remedial measures.

Prior to joining McDonald Hopkins, Battersby was the co-founder and co-leader of the Cybersecurity and Data Privacy Team at Miller, Canfield, Paddock, and Stone PLC.

Battersby earned his law degree from Wayne State University Law School in 2007. He received a Bachelor in Economics from the University of Michigan in 2004.

Lipson Neilson PC Shareholder Sandra D. Glazier has been selected by the American Bar Association to be on a panel that will discuss attorneys' roles and responsibilities in protecting aging clients (and their assets) from the seemingly well-intentioned but overly-influencing next generation.

This session, "It May Be a Small World, but You Still Need to Wait Your Turn Issues with Elder Planning and Abuse," will be moderated by retired Cook County Circuit Court Judge Cheryl D. Cesario, Probate Division, Evanston, Illinois, and includes other attorneys from around the country. Glazier is one of only three Michigan attorneys selected by the ABA to present at this national Symposia that will be held in Orlando, Florida during May 10-11.

The cases Glazier works on tend to be very complex and require technical as well as legal expertise. Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder recently announced the appointment of Barbara Smith to the Michigan Gaming Control Board.

Headquartered in Detroit, the Gaming Control Board is responsible for licensing and regulating the state's commercial casino gaming industry.

Smith is the owner of the Law Offices of Barbara B. Smith PLLC, and the owner of Smith Mediation Center. She has served as an administrative law judge, chairperson of the Attorney Grievance Commission, magistrate for the 48th District Court, and president of Michigan Malpractice Mediators.

Smith earned a bachelor's degree from Michigan State University, a teaching certificate from the University of Michigan, and a law degree from Western Michigan University Cooley Law School.

She will represent Republicans and fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Dale Zahn. She will serve the remainder of a four-year term expiring December 31, 2020.
