The Black Law Students Association at WMU-Cooley Law School’s Auburn Hills campus recently hosted a presentation on etiquette and professionalism. The Black Law Students Association at Western Michigan University Cooley Law School’s Auburn Hills campus kicked off Black History month by hosting a presentation on professionalism and etiquette. The keynote presenter was Jacqueline Baker of Scarlet Communications.
During her presentation, Baker addressed obstacles professionals face by lacking proper etiquette. She also shared tips on proper attire for various occasions.
“Many opportunities come to you when you step out of your comfort zone. Be prepared, know what you can handle, and show your confidence,” said Baker. “Understand that you bring your whole self to work, professional and personal. So, be sure to make deposits into every relationship that you have because you will have to make a withdrawal.”
Tanya Elzy, BLSA vice president, said the event was important for law students “because professional culture has changed and some offices have become extremely lax with the dress code, but as lawyers, we should always look professional as this is one of the first steps in being taken seriously.”
“When you choose what to wear, you choose how to influence others – it becomes leverage. So, think through what you plan to wear and what message you want to send,” said Baker.
