Soon, absentee ballots will be sent to voters for the Presidential Primary and Oakland County Clerk Lisa Brown has a few reminders for voters to ease the process.
“Michigan’s Presidential Primary is a closed election, meaning you have to choose a ballot style, Democrat, Republican, or no party (which won’t have any Presidential candidates on it, but will contain ballot proposals). Voters should also realize that there may be names printed on the ballot of candidates who have dropped out of the race,” Brown said.
Other Reminders:
• With the passage of proposal 2018-3, citizens can register to vote with their county clerk, city or township clerk, at a branch office of the Secretary of State or state agency that provides public assistance, by mail, or online until 2 weeks before the election.
• If registering to vote between fourteen days prior, up to and including Election Day, citizens must register in person at their city or township clerk’s office and must provide proof of residency to vote in the March election.
• Voters no longer need a reason to vote absentee. Absentee ballots can be requested from the local city or township clerk. To have your ballot mailed to you, you must return your application no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, March 6.
• Absentee ballots may look different than residents expect. Envelopes that were previously manila are now white. Voters are asked to use caution when sorting mail as not to miss it.
• Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on March 10. If you have previously requested an absentee ballot, but choose to vote at the polling precinct, please bring your absentee ballot with you to be spoiled.
• Absentee ballot applications, online voter registration, sample ballot, and polling place directory can be found at the Secretary of State website: www.michigan.gov/Vote.
As voting security also remains a concern for our citizens, “I also want to assure voters that our voting equipment is secure and federally certified. It never touches the internet and has many security features to ensure that every ballot is counted,” says Brown.
