Albert H. Choi has joined the University of Michigan Law School as a professor of law. He previously taught for 14 years at the University of Virginia Law School. His research and teaching interests include corporate law, contract law, corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, and law and economics.
“I am absolutely thrilled to join Michigan Law," Choi said. "The Law School is well known for its superb faculty and student body. I very much look forward to getting to know the faculty and the students better in the near future."
Choi—who will teach Contracts, Corporations, and Mergers and Acquisitions—was an assistant professor of economics at the University of Virginia from 2001 to 2005. He then became an associate professor and later a tenured professor at the University of Virginia Law School, where he taught from 2005 to 2019. He also was a visiting professor at Yale Law School in 2008-2009, the Austin Wakeman Scott Visiting Professor at Harvard Law School in 2009-2010, the Joseph F. Cunningham Visiting Professor of Law at Columbia Law School in fall 2015, and a visiting professor at the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 2017-2018.
From 2011 to 2014, Choi served as the director of the American Law and Economics Association. He currently is a co-editor of the American Law and Economics Review, and his research has been published in numerous journals, including the American Economic Review; Journal of Industrial Economics; Yale Law Journal; NYU Law Review; Virginia Law Review; Journal of Law, Economics, and Organization; Journal of Legal Studies; and Journal of Law and Economics.
Choi earned his JD from Yale Law School and his PhD in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was a National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellow. While at Yale, he was an Olin Fellow in Law and Economics and earned John M. Olin Research fellowships in 2000 and 2001.
