Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette recognizes National School Bus Safety Week, October 22-26, and reminds all Michigan residents of the importance of school bus safety. Bullying and suicide remain top tip categories for OK2SAY – and school busses are no exception for bullying.
“The school bus can be a very vulnerable place for students,” said Schuette. “This is why I encourage all bus drivers, parents, and teachers to be aware of the signs of bullying and know how to intervene in potentially dangerous situations and properly report the tip to OK2SAY.”
Every third week in October, National School Bus Safety Week is held throughout the country so parents, students, teachers, motorists, school bus operators, school administrators, and other interested parties can join forces to promote and improve high standards for school bus safety. This year’s theme, derived from a poster contest last year, is “My Driver-My Safety Hero!”
School bus safety tips:
• Tell adults when bullying happens, parents, teachers, bus drivers.
• Report the incident to OK2SAY.
• Ride with a buddy; pair up with a neighborhood friend and always stick together.
• Stand up for other students who are being bullied to stop it from going further.
Schuette is continuing urging Michigan principals who have not, to fill out or update the online OK2SAY School Contact Form. When a school designates specific individuals with whom OK2SAY technicians can follow up with regarding tip information, it helps them save time and lives.
