Michigan Municipal League honors Ann Arbor city attorney

The Michigan Municipal League honored Ann Arbor City Attorney Stephen Postema with its Outstanding Service Award during the League's annual Capital Conference in Lansing last week. The award recognizes those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in supporting the League's legislative efforts in Lansing on behalf of Michigan communities. "Stephen Postema's expertise and leadership was essential to the enactment of this legislation to reform municipal liability related to sidewalks," said William Mathewson, General Counsel for the Michigan Municipal League. "The end result is savings to taxpayers of millions of dollars." Matthewson noted that Postema's assistance on legal and policy matters has been invaluable, and includes his review of numerous amicus briefs to the Michigan Supreme Court and Michigan Court of Appeals on behalf of all Michigan cities and villages. In his role as Ann Arbor's city attorney, Stephen Postema has been an active member of the League, including serving as chair of its Legal Defense Fund. He is the immediate past president of the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys and currently serves as chair of its legislative committee. In a statement, Postema noted that the legislative committee of the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys has worked hard to change the laws in important ways to protect the state's municipalities. "I am pleased to work with such dedicated individuals," he said. "Robert West of the City Attorney's Office did an excellent job also educating the legislators on the governmental immunity issues."
