Patterson declares September National Preparedness Month

Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson has declared September 2011 as National Preparedness Month (NPM) in Oakland County in a proclamation issued Wednesday. The slogan for the nationwide readiness campaign is "A Time to Remember. A Time to Prepare." "This year marks the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks," said Patterson. "Oakland County residents can honor the victims of that tragic day by taking steps to be prepared, vigilant and resilient." September kicks-off a month of promoting individual, family, school, business and community emergency and disaster preparedness. Patterson and Oakland County Homeland Security Division encourage everyone to create an emergency preparedness plan and kit for their homes and vehicles. Preparing for an event ahead of time will provide a quick response, and possibly save the lives of individuals and their families. Information on how to develop an emergency preparedness plan and kit can be obtained at www.oakgov.com/homelandsecurity. Oakland County Homeland Security Division also will provide free materials promoting family preparedness at the Arts, Beats & Eats Festival in Royal Oak during the Labor Day weekend. Staff will be available for questions from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day in the "Kids Zone" area south of West 7th Street and west of South Main. Oakland County's National Preparedness Month participation is part of a year-round effort by the Oakland County Homeland Security Division that includes encouraging citizens to report suspicious activity to local law enforcement as part of the "If You See Something, Say Something" campaign. Oakland County Homeland Security Division is a recognized NPM Coalition member, and will continue to promote all-hazards emergency management planning, conduct training and exercises, and encourage public and private partnerships to strengthen local response and recovery capabilities.
